💛 Spreading CHEER in Elmbridge
For 70 years, CHEER has been supporting older people across Elmbridge with friendship, advice, and a caring presence in the community.
Beginning in the 1950s as the Esher and District Old People’s Welfare Council, it is now a lifeline for many local residents. CHEER’s befriending service pairs volunteers with older people for home visits, chats, and social events — while their benefits advice team helps residents in Esher, Molesey, Thames Ditton, Claygate and beyond access the support they’re entitled to.
Even in an area like Elmbridge, loneliness and financial hardship are real issues for many. CHEER is the only local charity offering this kind of one-to-one, home-based support — and their work is more important than ever.
Volunteer with CHEER
CHEER is on the lookout for more volunteers to join their friendly team! There are several ways to help:
🫖 Befrienders – Give an hour a week to visit an elderly neighbour for a chat and a cuppa. It’s simple, rewarding, and can make a world of difference to someone who’s lonely.
🏠 Home Assessment Volunteers – Accompany a member of the CHEER team on home visits to help older people access benefits and support. You’ll need good communication skills, a smartphone for admin, and availability for a couple of Tuesdays or Wednesdays a month.
💡 Trustees – CHEER is also seeking new Trustees, particularly with experience in marketing and communications, fundraising, or social care. It’s a chance to shape the future of a much-loved local charity.
Whether you can give an hour a week or help guide the charity’s future, CHEER would love to hear from you.
